4th week/ quarta settimana

Until this point I have done about the 70% of the shapes and size of each parts of the sphere.
Next I had to put together the four sections and connect each by joints.
The main point in this step is connected at first the upper parts with the lower parts done this I could put a holder in between the two upper parts to keep them set and secure even if someone climb it.

Fino a questo momento ho lavorato sulle dimensioni e forme delle quattro parti della sfera portandole circa al 70%. Il prossimo passaggio era unirle grazie a dei giunti. Il punto principale in questa fase era connettere e far reggere le due parti superiori a quelle inferiori ed infine bloccare tenedo alla stessa distanza le quatro parti in modo sicuro tanto che ci si potrebbe salire su la sfera con tranquillita`.

One side and two parts I've connected without particular problem so I could move on to the other parts.

Un lato e due parti le ho connesse senza particolari problemi cosi ho potuto passare all' altro lato della sfera con le sue due parti.

the first joint on the second part ( means the 3th of all done) too has been easy to make...

but for the forth... trouble are on sight!!!!

Anche il primo giunto sulla seconda parte ( ovvero il terzo realizzato) non ha presentato alcun problema ...ma per il quarto ... guai in vista!!!!

This was the area where the joint supposedly should be placed, unfortunately the upper part had, exactly here, a vary small amount of wood and this was also very rotten so it was a prediction of a hard fight to get it right!!!

Anyway what I had to do at first was draw where to do the first hole to place the forth joint. At least the lower part was perfect.

Questa era l'area dove il quarto giunto supponevo di posizionare, purtroppo la parte superiore proprio in quel punto aveva poco legno e quel poco era anche molto rovinato... si preannunciava un duro combattimento per relaizzare il tutto al meglio!!!

Ad ogni modo la prima cosa da dover fare era iniziare a disegnare dove si doveva fare lo scavo nella parte inferiore. Almeno questa era perfetta.

In the end I decide to made everything as it was right and strong anyway because the joint were also stopper and spacer so by doing it I could put together the whole sculpture and have a much precise idea of what I've done( right and wrong) and what still was to be done, how, when and so on.

Alla fine comunque ho deciso di realizzare ogni cosa come se tutto fosse a posto e forte abbastanza perche` con il giunto in posizione, visto che funzionano anche per sostenere e fermare alla stessa altezza le altre parti, potevo assemblare l'intera scultura per avere una visione precisa di cio` che avevo fatto fino a quel punto e cosa restava da fare, come e quando.

3th week/ terza settimana

As before also the 3th week had start with moved in the center the 3th trunk (on the photo' left )and start the studying of the cutting line.



Come nelle settimane precedenti anche la terza comincia col portare il terzo tronco ( quello a sinistra nella foto) al centro e con lo studio della linea di taglio.


Here the only difficulty was that the trunk it was quite twisted but after that everything was good. I have done a 3/4 of a circle on a plastic sheet to get me a rightly shape to draw on the wood and with it I could also determinate the angle of the quarter to transfer to the other end and by that found the cutting lines and 90 degree surface.

Qui, l'unica difficolta` era che il tronco era un po` contorto ma a parte cio` il resto andava tutto bene. Per determinare la linea di taglio e le forme generali ho preparato una sagoma dei 3/4 di cerchio con la quale o anche potuto determinare gli angoli di inclinazione e trasferirli sui capi opposti del tronco fatto questo ho ricavato la linea di taglio ottimale.

Done the first cut I had to put on foot once again and start the other cut.

Fatto il primo taglio ancora una volta ho messo in piedi il tronco e tagliato l'altra parte.

Then draw the sphere walls' lines and start to cut the material inside.

Poi ho disegnato le linee dei muri della sfera e iniziato a tagliare il materiale all'interno.

The last trunk. Here too the length of the blade it wasn't enough to cut in one shot so, as before, I've done it in two times, though this time was enough just rolling the trunk on the other side and complete the cutting.

Anche qui la lunghezza della lama non era sufficente per fare il taglio in una volta sola quindi, come le altre volte l'ho fatto in due tempi. Per fortuna per il secondo taglio e` bastato far rotolare il tronco sul l'altro lato per completare il taglio.

second week/ seconda settimana

In this second week I start to make the inner shape of the sphere out of the two parts done last week.

In questa seconda settimana inizio a realizzare le forme interne della sfera nelle due parti del tronco preparate la settimana precedente.

For do this after I had roughly flatted the inner surfaces and make them at 90 degree I drew over the lines of the sphere' walls on each part then I cut away some corner from the outside to get a better idea of dimension a proportion I have to stay in and to make the sections much simple to handle and hold during the cutting.

Izio con lo spianare a grandi linee le superfici interne delle due parti in modo che risultino a 90gradi poi disegno le linee delle pareti della sfera. Il secondo passaggio e`quello di tagliare alcuni angoli all'esterno in modo da avere un idea migliore delle dimensioni e forme in cui dovevo stare ed anche per rendere piu` semplice maneggiare e tenere il legno durante i tagli.

See the huge size that the each parts still have I wanted to get as big as possible amount of wood out from these quarter and yet the main point now is to have the shape inside as much as possible close to the final size and shape wished so here too a careful plan for cutting was needed. A kind of strategy like in chess game!

Date le generose dimensioni che ogni parte ancora aveva, era importante cercare salvare piu` materiale possibile e ottenere grandi sezioni in modo da poterlo utilizzare per progetti futuri e comunque tenendo a mente che l'obbiettivo principale era quello di avvicinarsi il piu` possibile alle forme e dimensioni desiderate. Anche qui un attento studio dei tagli e`stato necessario, una sorta di strategia come in una partita di scacchi.

Here shapes and size were about at the 70%. Next was start the others two parts of the sphere.

Qui forme e dimensioni sono circa al 70%. Prossimo passo era iniziare le altre due parti della sfera.

REBORN sketches- RINASCITA bozzetti

Here some sketches about my last sculpture called "Reborn".

Made to be presented at Shodoshima Art Cross event during the last week of March hold in the island of Shodoshima, Kagawa ken, Japan.


Questi sono alcuni dei bozzetti preliminari per la mia ultima scultura " Rinascita" presentata all'evento "Shodoshima Art Cross", tenutosi l'ultima settimana di marzo sull'isola di Shodoshima, Kagawa ken, Giappone.

The material used it's woods. The size it's enough to let an adult sit inside with cross legs in a way that should remember the position had in the uterus. So the outside diameter it's about 120 cm, the inside diameter about 90 or 100cm that's means that the thickness' walls are around 20 or more cm.

Il materiale scelto per la sua realizzazione e` il legno. Le dimensioni sono tali da consentire ad un adulto di potersi sedere all'interno a gambe incrociate a ricordare la posizione nell'utero.
Quindi il diametro esterno e` intorno al 1.20m, uno interno tra gli 90 e i 100 cm. e uno spessore delle pareti di 20 o piu` cm..

the Begging-L'Inizio

End of January/Fine gennaio


The first trunk: 1.40m in length for almost the same in maximum diameter, about 1 ton in weight.

Il primo tronco: 1.40 m in lunghezza per circa lo stesso in diametro massimo e quasi una tonnellata di peso.

Trough its length I have to cut in half it to have the first to parts of the sphere.
I moved in the center of the working zone then start to think where the cut must be done to get each parts with enough material for make the shapes and size wanted and so I start to looking at it walking around and turning it up and down, left and right for almost half a day.
This was a very important moment because from here depends how simple or difficult the next stages of the work could be.

Devo tagliare a meta` il tronco in modo da ottenere le prime due parti della sfera.
Porto il tronco al centro dell'area di lavoro poi inizio a pensare alla linea di taglio migliore per avere le due meta`ognuna con sufficente materiale dal quale ottenere le forme e dimensioni volute; passo circa mezza giornata a studiare e guardare il tronco camminandoci intorno e girandolo piu` volte su se stesso: destra e sinistra, sopra e sotto.
Questo e` un momento particolarmente importante in quanto da qui dipende la ficilita` o meno delle sucessive fasi di lavoro.




Find the best cutting line has been quite challenging for several reason;
for example because the shape of the trunk was quite undulate, especially on one end which has been the nearest to the roots; on one side there was a huge hollow full of soil, flowers, plants that doesn't give the possibility to understand how deep and rotten could be the wood within; finally, the whole tree laid directly on the ground without any kind of cover for at least 4 years after has been cut, so many areas on the trunk were rotten by insects and rain.
The choice of this line has be done by keep in mind all these facts and compromise with the final shapes and size I wanted.

La scelta era particolarmete difficile per diverse ragioni, per esempio: la forma del tronco (dalla parte piu` vicina alla radice) era particolarmente ondulata; su un lato c'era un grosso buco pieno di terriccio, fiori, piante etc. che non permetteva di capire esattamente quanto potesse essere rovinato il legno al suo interno; infine, l'intero albero e` rimasto sdraiato sul terreno senza nessun tipo di copertura per almeno 4 anni dopo il taglio, quindi molte aree sulla sua superfice erano rovinate da insetti e pioggia.
Per scegliere questa linea dovevo tenere in considerazioni tutti questi fattori in relazioni delle forma e dimensioni che volevo ottenere e trovare il compromesso migliore.


As you can see the chain saw used it wasn't the best for the size of this work due for lack of power and length of the blade. However the diameter of the trunk was just the double of the blade' length, so I could just cut it in two times: at first when the trunk was lay down. The second done by put the trunk "on feet" and do the next cut at exactly opposite side.


Come si puo` vedere la sega a motore usata non era l'ideale per la mole di lavoro da svolgere sia per la mancanza di potenza del motore sia per la lunghezza della lama. Comunque dato che il diametro massimo del tronco era giusto il doppio della lunghezza della lama e` bastato compiere il taglio in due tempi; il primo con il tronco ancora sdraiato ed il secondo con il tronco "in piedi" tagliandolo esattamente dalla parte opposta.








Has been a very slow work to complete due to don't burn the engine of my little chainsaw but mostly because I needed to be very careful to drive the blade on the straight line wished for the wood inside was quite hard, solid and yet humid so there was always a risk that the blade could start to follow the fiber' direction that crossing mine and if that happened the result most likely could be that the next cut could not meet the first one and so in the end the trunk should be just a "slaughtered one" in stead have two parts nicely and perfectly divided!
"Slaughtered" because If the two cuts do not meet precisely in the center will be a very "nasty job" going to redone it. At first we should try to determinate where and how long the cuts mismatch (directions and degrees). Usually the two cuts just overlap each other in some point on different degree but it's almost impossible especially on this size of tree see something inside it so you have just to try again loosing time, a lot of material and energy!!!!
Anyway, fortunately the two cuts met perfectly in the center trough the entire trunk' length so everything was almost done.



E` stato un lavoro abbastanza lento da portare a termine sia per non bruciare il motore della povera motosega sia e sopratutto perche` dovevo prestare molta attenzione a seguire perfettamente la traiettoria voluta guidando la lama della sega all'interno del tronco (abbastanza duro e compatto ed anche ancora umido) evitando che questa iniziasse a seguire la direzione delle fibre del legno che potevano incrociare la direzione voluta. Se questo fosse accaduto il taglio sucessivo molto probabilmente non avrebbe incontrato il primo o solo in alcuni punti con la conseguenza di essere costretti a dover "macellare" l'albero nel tentativo di dividerlo. "Macellare" forse non e` il termine migliore ma sicuramente cercare di recuperare un errore del genere davvero risulta uno "sporco lavoro" soprattutto con un tronco di queste dimensioni. Per prima cosa bisogna determinare come, dove e quanto i due tagli divergono. Nella maggior parte dei casi succede che si sovrappongono semplicemente divergendo in direzione e/o inclinazione od entrambe; determinato per quanto possibile si puo`riprendere almeno uno dei due tagli reimpostando la direzione.
Ad ogni modo tutto cio` non e` sucesso ed i tagli hanno diviso il tronco perfettamente in due come voluto.






For safety reason I didn't cut all the way trough the trunk but leave a small amount of wood uncut enough to keep the two parts together because as soon as the two parts were entirely divided from that standing position they could crumbling, crashing and probably rolling down who know exactly where and with a weight of almost 500 kg each I didn't want be around still holding a running chainsaw.... though in this case I wish don't to be close to them even without a chainsaw!!!! So I let that bit a wood, tied with a rope the trunk, connected to the truck and with this pull it down letting be split in half by the crashing and the weight of the trunk it self and with me at a safe distance.

Per motivi di sicurezza, non ho voluto tagliare il tronco completamente in due ma ho lasciato una piccola lingua di legno che tenesse insieme le due parti. Questo perche` appena quella piccola quantita` di legno fosse stata tagliata le due parti, pesanti ciascuna circa 500 kg, sarebbero crollate e rotolate al suolo chi sa dove ed io non volevo trovarmici vicino con la motosega in mano ancora in funzione!...a pensarci non vorrei starci vicino neanche senza motosega!!!
Quindi ho lasciato questa lingua di legno, imbragato il tronco con le corde, legato al camioncino e con questo lo fatto schiantare a terra cosi`che l'impatto ed il peso del tronco in se spaccassero il materiale rimasto dividendolo completamente e con me alla giusta distanza.






Here I finally discovered how deep the hollow was, how ruined was the wood inside and how much material left I had to work with. Luckily was still enough.

Finalmente qui ho potuto vedere quanto fosse profondo il buco, quanto rovinato era il legno e quanto materiale avevo sul quale poter lavorare. Fortunatamente ancora abbastanza!

Turning and rolling this one-ton trunk has been for it self a quite slowly and sometime even dangerous work to do. If something wasn't done carefully perhaps when lifted up some stopper could slip away or the trunk it self could do suddenly and rolling and crumbling or sweeping, eventually crashing down with everything attached with or over me!!!
But sometimes just happened to lose time by mistaken the right place where the knot and cable should be located so the rotation or direction will be not as I wanted. Other times I found out that the cable has been trapped between the trunk and the woods beneath so I couldn't moved anywhere and force me to do again the lift!

Sollevare e girare questa tonnelata di tronco e` stato di per se un lavoro lento e a volte anche pericoloso. Se non si era sufficentemente attenti il rischio era che qualche zanca potesse scivolare via facendo cadere il tronco o che questo mentre lo si sollevava potesse slittare, dondolare ed eventualmente pure cadere a terra portandosi tutto dietro me compreso!
L'incoveniente minore succedeva quando semplicemnte sbagliavo a posizionare il nodo o il cavo cosi che il tronco non girava od inclinava come e quanto volevo. Altre volte mi accorgevo che il cavo era rimasto intrappolato tra il tronco e i legni sotto impendomi di muoverlo e forzandomi quindi a sollevarlo e rifare ancora.
